Designing a logo is a creative and fun process that involves understanding the client's needs, exploring different ideas, and refining the final product.Â
In this post, I will share with you how I designed a logo for my uncle's fishing hobby, and what challenges and solutions I encountered along the way.
The Brief âĄ
My uncle is an avid fisherman who practices catch and release, which means he releases the fish he catches back into the water. He wanted a personal logo that reflects his passion and his name, Gabi. He also wanted the logo to include the initials C&R, which stand for catch and release.
The Process âĄ
1. Sketching
The first step was to sketch some rough ideas on paper, using different shapes, fonts, and styles.
I experimented with different ways of writing Gabi and C&R.
2. Drafting
After sketching several options, I chose one that I liked the most and scanned it into my computer.
I used Adobe Illustrator to trace the sketch and create a vector version of the logo. I sent this first draft to my uncle for feedback.
He liked the overall concept, but he suggested some improvements.
3. Refining
Based on my uncle's feedback, I started to refine the logo by making some adjustments to the shapes, proportions, and details:
âą I wanted to make the logo look more like a fish, so I modified the letter 'G' to resemble a fish head by enlarging it, adding carp whiskers and an eye.Â
âą I also manipulated the letters 'B' and 'I' to form a fish fin.Â
âą I made sure that the letters were still legible and balanced.
4. Outlining
To give more flexibility to the logo, I created two types of outlines:Â
âą A curved one that follows the shape of the letters.
âą A flat one that only resembles a fish shape.
5. Coloring
The final step was to choose some colors for the logo. I wanted to use colors that are related to fishing and nature, such as blue, green, orange, and yellow.
I also wanted to create some contrast and harmony between the colors.Â
I made several color combinations and sent them to my uncle for him to choose his favorite one.
